The Shed: Helping families in need

Following its inception in 2020, the Saint Kentigern One Organisation initiative known as ‘The Shed’ has grown from strength to strength. In 2021 we assembled and delivered 1465 food boxes to social workers who in turn distributed them to families in need across 60 schools in Glen Innes, Panmure, South Auckland and West Auckland.

At a cost of approximately $65.00 per box, we have delivered an equivalent of over $96,500 worth of food, a substantial gift which would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of our Saint Kentigern community. This included a $25,000 grant from the Trust Board, donations of over $52,000 from parents and thousands of food bank items received from our schools’ regular Food Bank collection.

In Terms 1, 2 and the first three weeks of Term 3, 386 food boxes were assembled and delivered by 70 wonderful parent volunteers from across our campuses who worked on either Tuesday or Thursdays from 11.00am-1.00pm to prepare and assemble the boxes, and from 1.00pm-2.00pm to deliver them to participating schools.

Following Auckland’s move to Level 3 Lockdown in mid-August, and the resulting increase in need, we grew our capacity considerably. A further 1079 food boxes were distributed over a three-month period. We would like to acknowledge Martin Piaggi, the Director of Boarding who prepared 88 boxes per week during the Lockdown and Tony Arrol, our Head of Chalmers (Middle School) who helped with the purchasing of food and the delivery of the food boxes.

A standard Saint Kentigern food box contained the following items:

  • 3x Canned baked beans
  • 2x Canned fruits
  • 2x Canned tomatoes
  • Soup Mix
  • Canned tuna (500g)
  • Pasta (300-500g pasta/spaghetti)
  • Rice (Ikg)
  • Jam or Honey
  • Weetbix (750g)
  • Tea bags (30 pkt)
  • Toilet paper (4 pkt)
  • Toothpaste
  • Soap (2 pkt)
  • Milk (2L)
  • Margarine
  • 2x Bread
  • Carrots (1.5kg)
  • Onions (3 large)
  • Mince (750g)
  • Chocolate biscuits (or similar)

In 2022 we plan to continue our effort to serve families in need and will resume production and delivery of food boxes with the aim of distributing between 50-60 food boxes to the community each week.
