Competitive spirit at swim sports

We were fortunate to have our swim sports underway during the term, with the boys’ eagerly diving in and giving it their best when the swimming events came around.

This year the Year 7 boys held their swimming sports as a Year 7 cohort in week 3 of Term 1 when the Year 8 boys were away at camp. This was the first time we have done this, and it was very successful. The event was wrapped up within the morning instead of a full day. Our Year 7 swim sports is always interesting as the new boys that came into Year 7 from other schools had the opportunity to show their abilities. Suffice to say, we were not disappointed!

Everything was going well and then Omicron encroached into our school community. Summer has always been dedicated to swimming. Determined to continue our swim events, we moved them to the end of the term so as many boys as possible could compete. By the last week of the term, we were fortunate that rules changed, and parents were allowed on site to watch. It has been such a long time since parents have been on site, so they were happy to be able to attend.

We have also changed the format of how we organised our swim meets for the other year groups. The Year 5 and Year 6 swam as a group, then the Year 3 and Year 4 together before we finished off with the Year 8 competition. The events were all held in the late morning or the early afternoons. So inspite of the faulty heater, and dependance on natural sunlight for heating, our boys were undeterred as they desmonstrated true competitive spirit regardless of the pool temperature.

The highlight of the Term was undoubtedly the swim relays. The competition was fast and furious, and the boys had a fantastic time supporting and swimming for their houses. The final race between the boys’ and staff was the most anticipated, with the staff winning by just an arm’s length.

Unfortunately, all zone events were cancelled this year due to rise in Omicron cases in the community but we look forward to an uninterrupted 2023!
