Cooking for the community
Every term, our Boys’ School community come together to prepare meals for families in need through our ongoing Food from the Heart initiative.
This term, we invited our Year 7 boys and their families to volunteer and were fortunate to receive overwhelming response with the group successfully preparing two large platters of chocolate brownies, four dozen savoury muffins, 16 serves of pork fillets with apple sauce and another 16 serves of chicken parmigiana, two enormous pots of vegetable soup and countless meat pies.
Year 7 student, Harley Evans shared his experience with us….
On 31 May, twelve Year 7 boys and their parents gathered at the Boys’ School Food Tech room to prepare meals for our Food from the Heart initiative. We all had fun cooking because it was a social event, but it was also an event to fill the freezers with delicious food to share with the school community.
At each cooking station there was a recipe for what we had to make. There were two parents and two boys at each station, and we worked as a team to cook the dish. There were easy and hard recipes from brownies to pork and apple gravy. At my station we prepared chicken parmigiana. We all started off chopping lots of vegetables and while the tomato sauce cooked, Aston’s dad and I ran a production line to coat the chicken in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs. As we did this, my mum and Aston fried the chicken. At the other stations, brownies, mince and muffins filled the room with delicious aromas. We can see pies being put together and soup poured into containers. After cooking, we cleaned up and packed away all cooking utensils ready for the next day.
The food was made under strict hygienic conditions and lots of care. Mrs Hindson, our Food Tech teacher, and parents who manage the Food from the Heart programme did a great job organising the first gathering for the year and we hope to do it again soon.
There was amazing team spirit, and I could see the boys and their parents really enjoying themselves. We even had a treat of delicious brownies at the end.
