Student-led initiative in support of World Vision

At the Girls’ School, our group of Student Councillors with two representatives from each class from Year 3 to Year 8 take significant pride and effort in carrying out their service responsibility throughout the year in support of those in need.

In Term 1, our Student Councillors led by Council Head Vesa Zami and Deputy Head Caitlin Best, came up with the idea of hosting a Mufti Day to raise money in support of World Vision’s work to help children who have been displaced due to the current situation in Ukraine. World Vision continues to provide aid to families who have become refugees by providing health and educational packs.

Speaking on the Mufti Day, one of the Council Members, London Leighton said, “It was great to see everyone coming together, all dressed in their mufti gear and bringing a gold coin donation or more to support the cause. We were happy with the amount we collected, with the proceeds going to World Vision to help children in Ukraine. We are glad we can contribute in our own way to those in need.”

The Girls’ School Student Councillors meet every fortnight. At these student-led Council meetings, the girls will discuss service opportunities and fundraiser ideas, and where possible, link them to relevant issues around them. Student representatives then take these ideas back to their classes for further deliberation and bring feedback to the Council for a decision.

The agreed idea, which is carried out as a school-wide initiative, is a great opportunity for our girls to get behind a worthy cause and make a real difference to those affected by an ongoing issue or need.

Over the years, our Student Councillors have organised a variety of meaningful events. Last year, for example, the Council hosted a Book Day where everyone including teachers came together dressed up in their favourite book character and bought a book to swap with each other or to donate to the school’s library.

We are proud of the level of thought and enthusiasm these Student Councillors have shown in organising these initiatives and can’t wait to see what else they have planned for the year.
